Academy of Natural Science

We visited the Academy in order to examine and photograph their collection of persicaria.  The entry hall had some terrific display specimens, this one is a sunflower:






In the herbarium Daniel found a type specimen -- see the post "A Primer on Specimen Preserving" for a refresher on this ;-).  I photographed about 300 specimens.  It was a great way to spend a filthy day -- high heat and humidity followed by torrential rain.  Herbaria are kept very very cool and dry so we were happier inside than out.


We have ended up at a motel in Lancaster.  Here is a cheesy shot of Daniel in a buggy and faux horse by a gas station nearby.  We will hightail it out of town early tomorrow with the goal of making it to the Ohio River in time to collect.
